Pay a bit extra for compatible filters

There are two thoughts on dehumidifier filters. If you have respiratory or allergy issues in your home, the replaceable throw away filters are best if changed often. On the other hand, washable dehumidifier filters are good if you clean them properly and consistently. These can also save you money in the end.

Almost every dehumidifier you buy has its own type of filter. Some are round, some are square and some are rectangular. Replaceable filters have electrostatic capabilities and washable dehumidifier filters have an accordion style base. Each one is different and each brand – and even some models from the same brand – has a different filter. To get the best dehumidifier filter, keep some good advice in mind.

The manufacturer of the dehumidifier itself, like Whirlpool Corporation, Maytag or DeLonghi, knows best; if you know your model number they can best advise you of the type and style you require. There are generic brands of filters available, but buy only one to start - do not invest in filters that may not fit properly. Some generic dehumidifier filters work well, but (as with any product) there are pretenders and bandwagon-jumpers who don’t know the nuances of the regular branded dehumidifier filters. Name-brand dehumidifier manufacturers pay top dollar for research and development of their units and their filters, so remember the age-old sage advice: you get what you pay for.

You do not want to defeat the purpose of a dehumidifier in the first place and create more bacteria in the air, add to mold in your home and perhaps even compromise the structural of your home. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra dollar or two and get what is right for your dehumidifier.

For washable filters, clean them with a high powered jet. If you are going to use some cleaning or sterilizing solution make sure you check with the manufacturer so it doesn’t negate your warranty.  

Whole home dehumidifier filters generally cost about $30. Manufacturers recommend you change them once a year. Doing a monthly check of the filter will give you a better idea of when to change them. If you have any health-related issues or mold problems in your home change your dehumidifier filters at least twice a year at minimum.
